AI Adoption Score: FranchisePulse’s own editorial metric of how deeply a system has deployed AI (methodology). The Index publishes no link between that score and franchisee profitability.
McDonald's leads on AI adoption (87/100 vs 85/100, Q3 2026), while McDonald's is the larger system by unit count (45,356 vs 40,990). McDonald's is growing faster year-over-year (+4.3%).
What this matchup actually shows
The 2-point headline gap is not evenly spread. The widest divergence is operations AI, where McDonald's leads by 6; the two are closest on data infrastructure, separated by just 1. Starbucks takes 2 pillars back — data infrastructure and marketing AI — despite trailing overall.
On scale, McDonald's runs about 1.1× the units of Starbucks and also leads on AI. No other tracked system scores between Starbucks (#2) and McDonald's (#1).

McDonald's
#1 of 15 in its sector · +19 vs sector average · best operations AI 92, lowest training & support AI 82
McDonald's had 45,356 restaurants at the end of 2025, about 95% of them franchised, and $139.4 billion in systemwide sales. Its clearest AI investment is infrastructure: Google Cloud edge computing inside restaurants, under a partnership announced in December 2023, to track how kitchen equipment performs and reduce disruptions. Customer-facing AI has been uneven — a voice-ordering test with IBM in more than 100 U.S. drive-thrus was ended in 2024.
Starbucks
#1 of 7 in its sector · +23 vs sector average · best data infrastructure 90, lowest training & support AI 76
Starbucks is licensed and company-operated rather than franchised in the classic sense: at the end of fiscal 2025, 52% of its 40,990 stores were company-operated and 48% licensed, and an April 2026 joint venture moved 60% of its China retail business to Boyu Capital, shifting those roughly 8,000 stores toward a licensed model. Its published AI is narrower than its Deep Brew branding once suggested: Green Dot Assist, a generative-AI assistant for baristas built with Microsoft, and an AI inventory-counting tool rolled out to more than 11,000 North American stores in 2025 and retired in May 2026.
What actually separates them
The 6-point edge McDonald's holds on operations AI (35% of the score) is worth about 2.1 points, against 0.9 for McDonald's on training & support AI.
