What this matchup actually shows
The 4-point headline gap is not evenly spread. The widest divergence is operations AI, where McDonald's leads by 7; the two are closest on data infrastructure, separated by just 1. McDonald's leads on every pillar, not just on the total.
On scale, McDonald's runs about 2× the units of Domino's and also leads on AI. Between Domino's and McDonald's in the Index: Starbucks (85).

Domino's
#2 of 15 in its sector · +15 vs sector average · best data infrastructure 88, lowest training & support AI 76
Domino's documented AI is operational and customer-facing: a machine-learning order-tracking engine inside DomOS, its proprietary operating system, now sets the ready time customers see, and a generative-AI alliance with Microsoft announced in 2023 targets ordering and store operations. The best-known computer-vision tool, DOM Pizza Checker, belongs to Domino's Pizza Enterprises, the separately listed master franchisee that built it, not to Domino's Pizza, Inc.
McDonald's
#1 of 15 in its sector · +19 vs sector average · best operations AI 92, lowest training & support AI 82
McDonald's had 45,356 restaurants at the end of 2025, about 95% of them franchised, and $139.4 billion in systemwide sales. Its clearest AI investment is infrastructure: Google Cloud edge computing inside restaurants, under a partnership announced in December 2023, to track how kitchen equipment performs and reduce disruptions. Customer-facing AI has been uneven — a voice-ordering test with IBM in more than 100 U.S. drive-thrus was ended in 2024.
What actually separates them
The 7-point edge McDonald's holds on operations AI (35% of the score) is worth about 2.4 points, against 1 for McDonald's on marketing AI.
Sector context
In QSR & Fast Food (15 tracked, average 68/100 against 63 for the Index), Domino's ranks #2 and McDonald's #1 on AI, both above the sector average.
