McDonald's had 45,356 restaurants at the end of 2025, about 95% of them franchised, and $139.4 billion in systemwide sales. Its clearest AI investment is infrastructure: Google Cloud edge computing inside restaurants, under a partnership announced in December 2023, to track how kitchen equipment performs and reduce disruptions. Customer-facing AI has been uneven — a voice-ordering test with IBM in more than 100 U.S. drive-thrus was ended in 2024.
What actually separates them
The 28-point edge McDonald's holds on operations AI (35% of the score) is worth about 9.8 points, against 5.7 for McDonald's on data infrastructure.
