Drive-thru voice AI reaches the mid-market — Presto plugs into Toast
Restaurant Dive reported on 21 September that Presto Phoenix has joined Toast's partner ecosystem, so brands already running Toast's point-of-sale can deploy drive-thru voice AI without, in the vendor's words, substantial new hardware. Presto puts the product at roughly 95% order accuracy with worker intervention on about 10% of orders — both its own figures, and the second is the one an operator should read first, because it is a labour number, not a technology one. One Toast customer was live at announcement; earlier pilots include Dairy Queen, Taco John's, CKE and Wienerschnitzel.

A survey of operational AI published by Franchising.com on 20 September puts Bojangles' voice assistant Bo-Linda live at 452 of the chain's 800-plus locations — 280 company-owned, the remainder franchised — with the brand saying a human steps in 1–2% of the time. The same piece has Burger King expecting its employee-coaching chatbot Patty nationwide by year end, Little Caesars sequencing Hot-N-Ready production with AI, and Head to Toe Brands running a single performance dashboard across 200 units and four service brands. The intervention rate is the brand's own; no third party has audited it.

Nation's Restaurant News previewed FS/TEC 2026 on 18 September: more than 600 operators and 650 vendors at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, Texas, for the conference's thirtieth year, with agentic-AI sessions from Oracle and Momos, an AI scheduling session from Harri, and back-of-house sessions led by PAR and Crunchtime among others. The agenda is the signal worth reading. The decisions being handed to software are moving away from the order point and towards the rota and the prep list — which is where a franchisee's controllable costs actually live.

Meritage Hospitality Group, which runs 314 Wendy's restaurants — roughly 5% of the chain's US system — plus one Bojangles and five independent concepts across 15 states, filed for Chapter 11 on 18 September, Restaurant Dive reported. The company cited beef inflation, deep discounting under former leadership and marketing misses, and said franchise store-level margins hit a 30-year low with store-level EBITDA down 48%. No technology mandate appears anywhere in the coverage, and we are not suggesting one caused this. It is the margin every AI rollout is now being sold into, which is the reason to note it here.
来源: Restaurant Dive ↗A hotel operator builds its own AI labour forecaster — and publishes no numbers
Aimbridge Hospitality launched LIFT, its Labor Insight and Forecasting Tool, on 2 September, Hotel Dive reported: a proprietary dashboard that pulls labour data from several systems and uses AI-assisted forecasting to put forecasting, scheduling and execution on one screen for property teams and owners. Aimbridge describes pilot results as positive and points to productivity gains in housekeeping and laundry, but published no figures for either. For an owner, that is the whole question — labour is the line that decides a hotel's profit, and "positive" is not a measurement.
来源: Hotel Dive ↗Papa Johns swaps a 30-year-old POS for PAR — and calls AI a tool, not the edge
Restaurant Dive reported on 15 September that Papa Johns has replaced its three-decade-old in-house point-of-sale system with PAR Technology's platform across 3,200 US restaurants, with managers now using AI to forecast sales and plan labour. The context is a same-store sales decline of more than 8% last quarter. Chief digital and technology officer Kevin Vasconi said technology is not a competitive advantage "in and of itself" — a more sober line than most rollout announcements, and the right test for franchisees asked to adopt the new stack.
来源: Restaurant Dive ↗Batteries Plus puts AI on the store phone — and on the franchise sales line
Batteries Plus has unveiled three proprietary AI tools (announced 31 August, published by the IFA on 8 September): Edison answers store calls, which the brand says average about 30 a day per location; Wattson is a product search tied to the point-of-sale system; and Savannah is an SMS and voice agent that answers prospective franchisees and books discovery calls. Edison is being deployed to 700+ stores, with completion targeted for the end of September. The "multi-million dollar" value the president attaches to it is the company's own estimate, not a published result.

Google has added hotel booking to AI Mode in Search for English-speaking US users, Hotel Dive reported on 1 September, with ten launch partners: Choice Hotels, Hilton, Wyndham, IHG and Marriott alongside Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline and Trip.com. The partners act as merchant of record. For hotel owners paying their brand for distribution, the open question is whose channel an AI-agent booking really is — and nothing published so far says how those bookings are costed back to the property.

Yum Brands has closed the $1.5 billion sale of Pizza Hut outside China to LongRange Capital, Restaurant Dive reported on 1 September. When the deal was announced in June, Nation's Restaurant News reported that Yum will continue to provide its Byte by Yum technology to Pizza Hut outside China, with corporate services under a transition agreement. For Pizza Hut franchisees, the franchisor and the technology vendor are now different companies — which matters in a system where a franchisee is already suing over a mandated AI delivery tool.

The facial bar franchisor announced a nationwide rollout of an AI Skin Scanner on 14 September, which it says assesses seven skin biomarkers — including hydration, pore size, pigmentation and wrinkles — and feeds recommendations into its app. The brand frames it as consistency across locations and support for membership retention. The release says nothing about how biometric skin images are stored or who owns them, which is the question a franchisee collecting that data at the front desk should ask first.

O&M Restaurant Group, an Oklahoma operator of 23 Taco Bells, has selected Oscar AI to pull its store systems into one place and turn them into role-specific actions for executives, district leaders and store managers (announced 31 August). What makes it notable is who signed: the franchisee, not the franchisor. The vendor's headline figures — roughly $10,000 of annual profit per location, a 26-second drive-thru reduction — are presented as general customer averages, not results measured at O&M, and we could not trace them to any study or named methodology.

The Series D, led by Growth Equity at Goldman Sachs Alternatives and announced 28 August, brings in Meritech, Redpoint and Headline alongside. Owner sells independent restaurants an AI-managed stack — website, online ordering, app, CRM, support and phone ordering — which is close to the list a franchisee normally receives in exchange for a technology fee. The uncomfortable question for franchising is what that fee is worth once an independent can rent the same layer for cash.

The 2026 Annual Franchise Development Report, summarised by Franchising.com on 11 August, puts chatbot use at 54% of franchisors in the $101,000–$250,000 investment band, while only 31% run a lead-scoring system. The gap is the finding: brands have bought the AI that answers and largely skipped the AI that decides. The figures are aggregated from an anonymised franchisor questionnaire — no brands are named and no individual results are published.

Fahey Schultz Burzych Rhodes argues that mandating or restricting an AI tool is a disclosure event, not an IT decision: required vendor costs land in Items 6, 7 and 8, and computer-systems and training obligations in Item 11 (20 July). The same note flags United States v. Heppner (S.D.N.Y., 17 February 2026), in which the court held that communications with a generative AI platform carry neither attorney-client privilege nor work-product protection — a problem for any franchisor drafting policy inside a chatbot.

Taco Bell now runs Omilia voice AI at more than 890 US drive-thru lanes across 38 states, Restaurant Dive reported on 7 July. The count matters less than the path to it: Yum! slowed the rollout in August 2025 after customer complaints and users gaming the system, including the widely circulated order for 18,000 cups of water. Yum! says it works with several providers, Nvidia among them. Recovery, not launch, is the useful part of this story.

Everyone quotes an accuracy rate. Nobody says what it measures.
Two voice-AI deployments reported in the same week publish intervention rates an order of magnitude apart. Neither publishes a definition — and the definition is the only part a franchisee pays for.
The AI now answers first — for customers and for would-be franchisees
Batteries Plus put agents on the store phone and the franchise sales line. Google's AI Mode now books hotel rooms. The first conversation with a brand is moving to software.
Who owns the AI layer — and who pays for it
Three announcements in three weeks put the same capability in three different pairs of hands: a vendor's, a franchisee's and a franchisor's. Ownership is what decides the economics.
